JUNETEENTH Freedom Celebration at Lake Junaluska

On Saturday, June 19th, 2021, The Smoky Mountain District of the United Methodist Church will host a Conference-wide  JUNETEENTH Freedom Celebration at Lake Junaluska.
Join us in worship and celebration at this exciting and historic event. We believe it is a story worth sharing!
Our mission is to worship inclusively, educate our communities on their racial history, initiate critical conversations towards reconciliation, and celebrate African American freedom and culture.
This inaugural JUNETEENTH Freedom Celebration is an expression of the Smoky Mountain District’s desire to take a stand in word and deed - to speak out against injustices endured by African Americans and to work to end structural racism. The event is free and open to everyone.
Worship begins at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Stephanie Moore Hand will deliver a keynote address; acclaimed storyteller and historical interpreter, Novella Nimmo, from the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati, Ohio, will share re-enactments of the harsh realities of slavery; and local clergy and gifted musicians will lead in a powerful and celebratory worship experience.
After worship, the community is invited to party on the grounds (3:00 – 6:00 p.m.) with food trucks, inflatables, horseshoes and cornhole, vendors and exhibits, dancing, and family fun.
Share with your community! Click here to download the flyer for the event.

The Appalachian District Church Vitality Team has been prayerfully seeking ways to help support you and the ministries of your local congregation during this COVID-19 pandemic. Together they have diligently researched and connected with others throughout the conference and our denomination to identify resources and offer them to you. We hope they will be helpful to you and bless you greatly in leading your churches and communities through this unprecedented time. We are very grateful to the District Vitality Team and other contributors for their great work on this resource.
This faithful team has created three documents, two of which you are receiving today. They include:

  • Family Home Worship – designed to help families establish a regular worship space within their homes as well as a time where they can worship together.
  • Tech Strategies – to help guide you in selecting effective tools and resources within your budget to best communicate in the digital world.

We believe these resources will be of great benefit to you. Also know that the District Vitality Team is available to answer any questions you might have in regards to the documents attached. If you have questions, you may email Rev. Howard Fleming at hfleming@wnccumc.net.
